Because the REC that C= uses in the 1700/1750/1764 is patented and only they can use it. So, don't blame Berkeley Softworks (who don't care anymore, anyway since they are now GeoWorks doing the same thing for IBM PC/XTs that they did for the C64/128)... And very well I might add...
