Message-ID: <2291@megadon.UUCP> Date: 6 Dec 90 22:34:58 GMT Sender: clp@megadon.UUCP Organization: Bath University Computing Services, UK Lines: 39 Approved: clp@megadon.UUCP This as the subject says is a plea for help to anybody who owns, runs, or has used an ICL Clan 4. Last year we, the University of Bath computing society, were fortunate enough to have handed down to us an ICL Clan 4. Over the past few months we have been working hard on getting the thing up and running. Last friday the machine was, finally connected up to the PADs in one of the computing labs, and was regarded to be in a reasonable enough state to let our members begin to use it. Unfortunately the machine had a head crash sometime yesterday and, of course, this occured on disk #0, our boot disk. At the moment we are still unsure as to the extent of the damage and hope that we will be able to recover enough off of the disk to get the machine operable again. This is where we begin pleaing. Is there anybody out there who has operated a Clan 4, or who still owns one, who knows anything about the drives? We would like to know if anybody knows the company that originally made them, and if it is still in business, so we may enquire about a replacement. Or more hopefully, due to our rather low budget, anybody who has a dead Clan 4, but with working drives who may be willing for us to purchase one, or even two, as another drive is slowly dying. I am asking this as the machine has been giving those of us who have root or staff privledges a very good insight as to how to use a unix machine from the sys-admin side of things, and has been forcing us to write software for the machine. We have had communication with ICL, but they apparently no longer support the machine, this is why we are asking the public for help. Any help greatly appreciated, Jeremy Nicholls. Ps please could any responses by email to us at su9hbs@uk.ac.bath.gdt as it is coming up to the Xmas holidays and very few of us will be around to read anything from the net.
