Given a choice of using additional buttons or modal coding via multiple clicks or shift keys, extra buttons are easier to use. In fact, sometimes I even wish for a 5-button mouse -- and X is ready for it, even if "normal" clients aren't. BTW, the one-button mouse was a key factor in my decision a few years ago to buy a PC-AT clone instead of a Lisa.
