Monochrome NCD 16 X-terminals are nice and cheap.
but the 8bit NCD 19 X-terminals are very nice, faster and still cheap.

I have not tried the newest Tektronix X-terminals, but they claim
to be faster.  The first one we used, about 6 months ago, was the XN-10
and it was too slow compete.
