This is done in the AT's CMOS and/or in the config.sys file - depending on the controller, etc. In the case of CompatiCard, there is the statement: device = ccdriver (followed by appropriate hyroglyphics) that identifies the drive parameters. It may well be possible to accomplish the same thing using whatever driver your HDC/FDC uses to identify attached floppies. But, not having tried it, I don't know for sure.
