I don't know which gif->iff converter you're talking about, but there is
  one that is very good and not at all kludgy.  It's called hamsharp, is 
  available at better ftp sites everywhere, and produces spectacular results.

It takes a little while (about 5-6 minutes for a big 256 color gif) but 
  produces HAM output that is virtually fringe-free, especially when 
  you compare the output with a gif viewer like hamgif.
