Kermit should work equally well with a direct plug-in modem and a modem interfaced via an RS-232 interface; since, to the point of view of the computer, it is just sending commands to *something* out the user port. As long as the device which eventually receives those commands understands them (as any Hayes compatible modem should), everything should work all right. Two places you can order a Hayes compatible modem: Tenex Computer Express advertises the Aprotek Minimodem-C24, a 2400 baud Hayes and 1670 compatible modem (i.e. it really ought to work with any C-64 modem program ever written). The cost is $79.95, the stock number is 88148, and Tenex's number is 1-800-PROMPT-1. DISCLAIMER: I have nothing to do with Tenex. I've ordered some things from them, and have in general been happy with the service. I report this merely because I think it may be useful for people on this board. Software Support International has the same modem at the same listed price. There the stock number is #C02251. The number is (800)356-1179 (USA), or (206)695-1393 (International). DISCLAIMER: I have nothing to do with SSI. I've... happy... merely... this board. (You get the idea). -Rob Knop rknop@juliet.caltech.edu
