The cx and ci accommodated vertical mounting through appropriate placement of the air vents. Unless one uses a properly designed stand, a Mac II on its side may leave those air vents blocked. I've used several CDC drives mounted horizontally and vertically and never had reason to reformat simply to support reorientation.
