This has been a volunteer effort on my behalf since the beginning and, since taking over GenBank at IntelliGenetics, my time for it has been reduced significantly. I was away at two meetings in DC the last couple of weeks, had a pile of other work to do, and was ill on top of it. I hope to get caught up with the postings soon and get them out of my mail pile. The good news is that Paul Gilna from GenBank at LANL has expressed an interest in running this group. Part of his usual GenBank duties involve being the liaison between GenBank and journal editors, so he is well-positioned to develop BIO-JOURNALS further. He told me Saturday that we may be able to add PNAS to our offerings soon! He is also going to be adding sequence accession numbers to the TOC postings and will hopefully be able to expand the number of journal offerings further. This transition should occur in the next week or so. This change raises a technical issue which warrants some discussion. We previously decided to adopt BRS format as the standard for TOC submissions. As I do not have access to BRS directly, I would appreciate it if someone could send me sample BRS literature entries that demonstrate how sequence accession numbers are represented. I would particularly appreciate samples which have multiple sequences in a single article. Secondly, I realize that several users are downloading these postings into their reference database software. I need to know ***SOON*** whether the addition of a BRS format accession number line will cause you problems. Since accession numbers are not associated with every article, the issue also needs to be resolved as to whether these lines can be included with citations only as data occur or whether they should be included with all citations and just left blank if the article does not contain sequence data. Comments are welcome. Please feel free to either send them to me in private or post them to this newsgroup. Typically this group has not been a forum for chats, just TOC postings, but a chat might be needed before we lock the next regime into place. -- Sincerely, Dave Kristofferson GenBank Manager kristoff@genbank.bio.net
