I guess my life wouldn't be complete without a cause, and I've already won plenty of perl converts this month. :-) He then goes on to catch me being reactionary: >>Authoritative documents are for the anally retentive. >Now, now, let's not be so condescending. Well, ok. It's just that to me, Authoritative Document is a little strongly worded. If Bill Joy's stuff isn't authoritative enough for you, I don't know what is. I'm not used to people asking for Authoritative Documents on UNIX with which they can judge programs to be Right or Wrong. Sounds POSIXy or DECish or IBMic, and I'm just not comfortable with it. He then goes on to elaborate on things that should or should not be built in to the editor. Yes, paragraph formatting would be a nice optimization, but you can live without it. I do not that on my little sun, it seems to take forever, which I hate, but on my Convex boxen (~18 mips per head scalar, 1/4 gig), it's nearly instantaneous. I may well be spoiled by this. >:!cc % > >to compile the file without leaving the editor (to catch syntax errors). I would point you to my Meta-l macro. I never leave the editor without having run it. It runs lint, not cc, so it's faster, plus keeps the output at the bottom of the file for further reference, and knows to delete the old stuff when putting in new stuff. --tom -- Tom Christiansen tchrist@convex.com convex!tchrist "With a kernel dive, all things are possible, but it sure makes it hard to look at yourself in the mirror the next morning." -me
