This is *NOT* a problem of emacs--I use SunOS 4.0.3 on a 3/80 and the
shell stops working when a command line exceeds 255 characters, no
matter if I use an emacs shell, a command tool, a shell tool or a
plain terminal. So it might be difficult to correct that in emacs...
