For a discussion of APL, the philosophy behind it, and the role
of mathematical notation in programming, I recommend the
1979 Turing Award lecture, by Kenneth Iverson, the designer
of APL, entitled "Notation as a Tool of Thought". It is published
in the book _ACM Turing Award Lectures: The First Twenty Years_
(1987 - ACM Press).
