It is based on realistic assumptions: messages may be lost or duplicated; sites may crash; an object may migrate or be deleted. The protocol uses only information local to each site, or exchanged between pairs of sites; no global mechanism is necessary. It is parallel and should scale to extremely large systems. It takes into account the object-finding protocol. Its interface is designed for maximum independence from other components. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This report is available in hard-copy by sending a mail message with your paper mail address to: Nelly Maloisel , or by anonymous FTP: machine corto.inria.fr (128.93.11.2), directory pub/doc. The former is smaller and (in my experience) more portable than the latter, which has been prepared for a LaserWriter II NTX. -- Marc Shapiro INRIA, B.P. 105, 78153 Rocquencourt Cedex, France.
