OK, I forgot to mention the following from my earlier post...

You also might want to change the 666 modes in pop_updt.c and
pop_dropcopy.c to 600 also... This didn't seem to unreasonable either...
Somebody let me know if I am being near-sighted here... Hopefully before
rdist tonight... :-)
