There is an extension to the X server called (I think) Xtrap which traps the events and allows you to replay them. I'm not sure where to get detailed info on Xtrap (maybe the X Consortium or comp.windows.x). Digital's DEC/Test Manager V3.n uses this facility - and it works very well.
