That's "mthreads", not "trn".  Did you try not running "mthreads" and
using "trn" anyway?  It's supposed to essentially act as "rn" on
newsgroups without ".thread" files.

(I.e., keeping RN and TRN separate may not be necessary to avoid this
problem.)
