I got the thing working finally, and with the full compliment of LISP stuff loaded. I'm not sure what was wrong but it might have been the stack. I set it to 10000 and I have no problems now. The only question I have is...why is it so big? One accidental ^X^C and you're staring a full re-load in the face! I wonder if there's a way to make the core of the program resident? That way all you would do is mount the emacs core and then attach editor shells to it. Is there a way to do this sort of thing in AmigaDOS?
