I used two mechanisms, the ST-157N and ST-296N from Seagate. I can make a ST-251-1 work fine (using HDX 3.01) but have never, despite repeated attempts, succeeded in making a 'genuine' SCSI drive work. Now, if you're gonna take a stab at it, be sure to have an editor on the disk with HDX on it so you can modify your 'wincap' file, or else have another disk with the editor, etc. on it. If you get this to work, please let the world now. I do have one comment: MFM/ST-506 type drives are cheaper than SCSI drives. If you're looking for price/performance, consider some of the drives made by Maxtor/Colorado. They make a 70MB 19ms drive that really must work at about 5ms. (model 3085?)
