I don't think SUBST is your problem.  I use SUBST extensively as well
to extend the path, and even have the Word 5.0 directory SUBST'd as a
logical drive.  I've never had the problem you describe, across a lot
of DOS versions (currently 4.01).  Currently I'm using FILES=50.
My guess is your problem is something else.
