Too bad CMU decided Undergrads should not have access to the 'cancel' feature. Anyway, my problem was that I had a CTTY NUL and CTTY CON pair in the batch file that did the subst's. This was because if subst thinks a drive has already been substituted, the message comes through even with >nul on the line. So I got rid of those and all's well. I do remember reading somewhere that CTTY leaves a file open somewhere. I guess Word has a problem with that. But I'm fine now; I just rewrote the batch file so that it should never subst when it shouldn't. If anyone knows why Word had such a problem, or if there is a fix for CTTY, I'd still be interested. I heartily thank myself for finding the problem so quickly. :-) Thanks, \\\ Josh /// Josh Mastronarde jm9t+@andrew.cmu.edu
