Keywords: SCSI controller Message-ID: <1990Dec16.033208.27960@uncecs.edu> Date: 16 Dec 90 03:32:08 GMT Followup-To: poster Organization: UNC Educational Computing Service Lines: 23 In my 386SX with AMI BIOS and 44 MB HD, I am considering replacing the HD with a used 94 MB WREN III SCSI HD. The cost of the drive is very reasonable, compared with the usual cost of this size drive. I plan to sell the 44 MB and 1:1 WD MFM controller to help finance the switch. I understand that low-end SCSI controllers (e.g., ST02) are slow; and that high-end SCSI controllers are costly (e.g., Adaptec 1540B $250). The cheapest price I could find in the Shopper for an Adaptec 1522 was $160. I would appreciate recommendations for an SCSI controller (including vendor and price if possible) for this drive, with the emphasis on both economy and performance. This is a standalone machine with 4 MB RAM running only MSDOS applications and some games. What incompatibilities might I encounter running an SCSI HD? I hear the SCSI takes some of the high ram that QEMM would ordinarily map. Thanks in advance. -- Michael Volow, Psychiatry, Durham VA Med Center, Durham NC 27712 919 286 0411 Ext 6933 mvolo@ecsvax.edu
