About 18 months ago I was on a TWA flight to Paris from JFK. Pushback was delayed a little over an hour. They unpacked the baggage to retrieve two bags that were identified with connecting passengers who never came aboard. I don't know how common such checks are but I know from expereince that they occured at least once!
