You want to run rrn, not rn.  rrn uses NNTP, rn uses locally spooled files.

(In the best of all possible worlds, the next release of News will support
both, invisibly.)

Set the shell variable NNTPHOST in your .cshrc to be the machine that has
NNTP, and you'll be set for either News or rrn.
