I don't know why it's not shipped with truncating as default. I think it was due to something about meeting FIPS requirements. BSD does not truncate. Granted, it's a much larger size to deal with, but it doesn't truncate. Try creating a filename with 257 characters in its name: you'll get ENAMETOOLONG.
