They adopted that option because the Berkeley folks pushed for it (according to McKusick). So "those cretins" refers to the folks at Berkeley; SCO went along with it, after the fact, because it was required for government work. And note that it is now possible to configure this off, so it behaves like a sane V7 filesystem (in that respect only).
