Long ago, when I first started doing Motif programming, I had loads of
trouble figuring out listboxes.  I don't remember if I fell in the pothole
you describe, but I was on the same road (clear all previous items in a
listbox, in order to re-add current items).

What I found that worked was to set XmNitemCount to 0 via XtSetValues().
It's much easier than deleting the items one by one, and it hasn't given
me any strange behavior.
