Moreover, role models for them are hardly ever portrayed in books or on television. So it is that five new books for elementary readers in the series, "American Women in Science Biographies," offer most welcome and charming portrayals of five disabled girls who went on to become successful scientists. Although their disabilities are different, their efforts at overcoming barriers of gender, race, and econ- omic difficulties are similar. Each story is vividly told, consistently illustrating the importance of perseverance and self-confidence. This series is highly recommended. Cost, $4.50.
