According to Morton Hunt in SEXUAL BEHAVIOR IN THE SEVENTIES, monogamy was the exception throughout most of human history. Also, up until the AIDS epidemic changed a lot of behavior, 80% of ALL married women and men became involved in *some* extramarital sexual activity by the 5th year of marriage in the US.
