The book "Pilot," written in the mid-50s by Lockheed test pilot Tony LaVier,
is back in print as a Bantam paperback.  There are some howlers in editing,
the best of which is a drawing of a Constellation miscaptioned as "Bell X-1,"
but they claim that the text is faithful to the original. Those interested
in Lockheed A/C or military aviation history in general might want to 
check their local checkout counter.
