Hi -

	When I invoke M-x manual-entry (as described in section 21.9
of the Emacs Manual), rather than a readable-by-humans manual page I
get something that looks like this:

PPTH"!C($3&6a\ySg#aF$aN2s>|80`At
etc.

I checked what seemed to me to be the pertinent variables; they are

manual-program's value is "/bin/man"
manual-formatted-dir-prefix's value is "/usr/man/cat"
manual-formatted-dirlist's value is ("/usr/man/cat1" "/usr/man/cat2" "/usr/man/cat3" "/usr/man/cat4" "/usr/man/cat5" "/usr/man/cat6" "/usr/man/cat7" "/usr/man/cat8" "/usr/man/catl" "/usr/man/catn")

All of these seem reasonable to me.

Possibly useful info: I have installed GNU Emacs on our 1500 series Stardent
(formerly Ardent) Titan 2. It is presently running Stardent UNIX
Release 2.2 (UNIX System V Release 3.0 with some BSD extensions).

What am I doing wrong?
