As far as on-drive caching goes, does this just work automatically through standard SCSI? I think I remember reading in inCider a while back that one drive they looekd at (Western Digital Preference) had a cache in the drive, but they said it only worked on a Mac, and not other SCSI interfaces, even though technically the interface should be the same. I know that inCider doesn't have a very good track record about being right about _anything_; does anyone know for sure whether this caching makes a difference? (I have a friend w/ a 40 MB Preference who says he doesn't notice any big difference between it and other drives, but hasn't done any comparisons between the same mechanisms. Incidently, I showed him a GIF of Woz I got from ummts.umich.edu a few months ago; he said he didn't need it, because he saw enough of Woz in high school. Yup. I talked with him a bit more about that; he didn't really know Woz because Woz was a class or two ahead, except that he was talking calculus or something at the local college. My friend sat in front of Steve Jobs in band; he said it was really funny because Jobs was always trying te get first chair trombone when they had chair auditions, but always played terribly and made a real fool of himself. He also knew both Peter and Alan Baum (Alan wrote the monitor w/ Woz; Peter works at AE; their father Elmer provided the funding for the Apple I), and keeps in touch with them.
