Why?  UNIX isn't limited to 14-character names.  In fact, I just
dropped out of rn long enough to create a file with a _78_-character
name (the entire alphabet repeated three times).

Maybe you have some strange version of UNIX.  We're running 4.2 BSD
here--and that isn't even a current version!
