If you are wanting to do word processing, etc. you could use 
Appleworks with UltraMacros. UltraMacros has a one key option
which affects the open and solid apple keys. You could then map
the control sequences to solid apple sequences ( easier to do than
say ). Ultra would also give a lot of other handy options such as
easy startup, single keystroke saves etc.
