I don't know if Dos 4.0 causes any problems, but I don't have any problems with my Windows 3.0 in any of the video modes (including 1024x768). I have MS word for windows, MS Excel, screenpeace, wintris, and quite a few other graphics programs for Windows. The ultimate test is a new fractal program that uses all 256 colors and rotates the colors through the 16.7 million colors possible. I will comment that I had the unrecoverable application error, so I erased all my windows directories and reinstalled from scratch. The problem went away for 2 months, and I haven't had the errors again. I don't believe it is the video card or the drivers included. Maybe somebody out there might know what causes the "unrecoverable application error".
