while nntp seems to be working properly for the most part, I routinely
get numerous files in my /usr/spool/news directory named .inaxxxx and
araxxxx  where "xxxx" is some number.  now I understand this is where
articles are put that are to be processed, however, the number of
articles stayes constant even when nntp is not transfering, and when
nntp is transfering I can watch the count of files in the directory go
up by 2 then back down by the same 2, i.e. the previous .ina and .ara
files never get touched...
