This is not just my opinion (and a major reason that I prefer tube preamplifiers over transistor). I have had friends listen to both and they also notice a significant difference. I have never heard a transistor preamp for <= $1000 which comes near to sounding as good as my conrad johnson pv10 (in fact I have heard several thousand dollar transistor preamps which I don't think sound nearly as good).
