Well, what I really want is a book on evolution. 
Can someone recommend a book that details the current
thinking, in reasonable detail. Or if there isn't a 
book you can recommend, perhaps the work of a particular
researcher, or papers he/she has published.

Come to think of it, is there a good journal devoted
to evolution?
