GE does reentry simulation in a little known wind tunnel in south 'Philly;
I always botch up the name...Hyperaeroballistic Chamber?  At low pressures
(millibars), they run around Mach 2 - 3 @ circa 5,000 F.  Calculate the
Mach number at this temperature to translate it to miles/second.
