Some people occasionally make the claim that the deuterocanonicals are not quoted in the New Testament, that is, only the protocanonicals are quoted. Jews of the first century took the deuterocanonicals as well as the protocanonicals as the very word of God; other Jews rejected them. Generally, the Greek-speaking Diaspora Jews readily accepted the whole Bible, while the Jerusalem Jews rejected those parts written in the "barbaric" language of Greek. Since the New Testament was written in Greek, Christians tended to side with the Greek-speaking Diaspora Jews (with some notable exceptions such as Jerome). In many cases, it's difficult to know which book from the Old Testament is being cited; the phrases used are generally fairly ambiguous (one witness has it, the prophets say, etc.). Other quotations/allusions are not specified, the author tending to assume that the reader is familiar with the quotation/allustion. With this in mind, here are some possibilities from the rest of the New Testament (Acts of the Apostles): Acts of the 3:25 You are the children of the prophets and of the Apostles covenant that God made with your ancestors when he said to Abraham, "In your offspring all the families of the earth shall be blessed." Ben Sira 44:19-21 ABRAHAM, father of many peoples, kept his glory without stain: He observed the precepts of the Most High, and entered into an agreement with him; In his own flesh he incised the ordinance, and when tested he was found loyal. For this reason, God promised him with an oath that in his descendants the nations would be blessed, That he would make him numerous as the grains of dust, and exalt his posterity like the stars; That he would give them an inheritance from sea to sea, and from the River [Euphrates] to the ends of the earth. Acts of the 7:9-10 And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him Apostles into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him and rescued him from all his afflictions.... Wisdom 10:13 She [Wisdom] did not abandon the just man when he was sold, but delivered him from sin. Acts 10:34 Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. Wisdom 6:7 For the Lord of all shows no partiality, nor does he fear greatness, Because he himself made the great as well as the small, and he provides for all alike; but for those in power a rigorous scrutiny impends. Acts 14:17 In past generations he [God] allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways; yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts. Wisdom 13:1 For all men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan. Acts 17:26-27 He made from one the whole human race to dwell on the entire surface of the earth, and he fixed the ordered seasons and the boundaries of their regions, so that people might seek God, even perhaps grope for him and find him, though indeed he is not far from any one of us. Wisdom 13:6 But yet, for these the blame is less; For they indeed have gone astray perhaps, though they seek God and wish to find him. For they search busily among his works, but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair. Acts 20:35 In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Ben Sira 4:31 Let not your hand be open to receive and clenched when it is time to give. -- Sincerely, Cindy Smith _///_ // SPAWN OF A JEWISH _///_ // _///_ // <`)= _<< CARPENTER _///_ //<`)= _<< <`)= _<< _///_ // \\\ \\ \\ _\\\_ <`)= _<< \\\ \\ \\\ \\ <`)= _<< >IXOYE=('> \\\ \\ \\\ \\_///_ // // /// _///_ // _///_ // emory!dragon!cms <`)= _<< _///_ // <`)= _<< <`)= _<< \\\ \\<`)= _<< \\\ \\ \\\ \\ GO AGAINST THE FLOW! \\\ \\ A Real Live Catholic in Georgia Although not a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court, I am: A Real Live Southern Catholic in the Anglican Communion. [Some of those seem a bit tenuous to me. Other possible sources are Acts 3:25: Gen 22:18 Acts 10:34: Deut 10:17 I looked through the NJB of Acts to see if they found any quotations. While there are a couple of places where D.C. books might be considered relevant, the only thing like a quotation I found there (more a sort of echo I think) was the parallel between Acts 17:27 and Wisdom 13:6 that you suggest. --clh]
