Some people occasionally make the claim that the deuterocanonicals are not quoted in the New Testament, that is, only the protocanonicals are quoted. Jews of the first century took the deuterocanonicals as well as the protocanonicals as the very word of God; other Jews rejected them. Generally, the Greek-speaking Diaspora Jews readily accepted the whole Bible, while the Jerusalem Jews rejected those parts written in the "barbaric" language of Greek. Since the New Testament was written in Greek, Christians tended to side with the Greek-speaking Diaspora Jews (with some notable exceptions such as Jerome). In many cases, it's difficult to know which book from the Old Testament is being cited; the phrases used are generally fairly ambiguous (one witness has it, the prophets say, etc.). Other quotations/allusions are not specified, the author tending to assume that the reader is familiar with the quotation/allustion. With this in mind, here are some possibilities from the rest of the New Testament: Letter of Paul to the Romans. Romans 1:18-19 The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Wisdom 13-19 etc. etc. etc. Romans 1:20 Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. Ben Sira 17:7 He looks with favor upon their hearts, and shows them his glorious works, That they may describe the wonders of his deeds and praise his holy name. He has set before them knowledge, a law of life as their inheritance. Romans 1:22 While claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes. Wisdom 13:1-9 Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them. Or if they were struck by their might and energy, let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them. Wisdom 11:15 And in return for their senseless, wicked thoughts, which misled them into worshiping dumb serpents and worthless insects, You sent upon them swarms of dumb creatures for vengeance; that they might recognize that a man is punished by the very things through which he sins. Romans 1:24 Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies. Wisdom 12:25 Therefore as though upon unreasoning children, you sent your judgment on them as a mockery. Romans 1:26 Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. Wisdom 15:25 And all is confusion -- blood and murder, theft and guile, corruption, faithlessness, turmoil, perjury, Disturbance of good men, neglect of gratitude, besmirching of souls, unnatural lust, disorder in marriage, adultery and shamelessness. For the worship of infamous idols is the reason and source and extremity of all evil. Romans 3:9 Well, then, are we better off? Not entirely, for we have already brought the charge against Jews and Greeks alike that they are all under the domination of sin. Ben Sira 8:5 Shame not a repentant sinner; remember, we are all guilty. Romans 4:13 It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith. Sira 44:19-21 Abraham, father of many peoples, kept his glory without stain: He observed the precepts of the Most High, and entered into an agreement with him; in his own flesh he incised the ordinance, and when tested he was found loyal. For this reason, God promised him with an oath that in his descendants the nations would be blessed, that he would make him numerous as the grains of dust, and exalt his posterity like the stars; that he would give them an inheritance from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Romans 4:16 For this reason, it depends on faith, so that it may be a gift, and the promise may be guaranteed to all his descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law but to those who follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us. Sira 44:19-21 See above. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one person sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as all sinned -- etc. Wisdom 2:24 But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who are in his possession experience it. Romans 5:13 (cont.) for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. Wisdom 4:15 Yet the peoples saw and did not understand, or take such a thing to heart, that God's grace and mercy are with his elect, and that he watches over his holy ones. Romans 9:19 You will say to me then, "Why [then] does he still find fault? For who can oppose his will?" Wisdom 12:12 For who can say to you, "What have you done?" or who can oppose your decree? Or when peoples perish, who can challenge you, their maker? or who can come into your presence as vindicator of unjust men? Romans 9:20 But who indeed are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Will what is made say to its maker, "Why have you created me so?" Wisdom 15:7 For truly the potter, laboriously working the soft earth, molds for our service each several article: Both the vessels that serve for clean purposes and their opposites, all alike; as to what shall be the use of each vessel of either class the worker in the clay is the judge. Romans 9:22 What if God, wishing to show his wrath and make known his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction? This was to make known the riches of his glory to the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared previously for glory, namely, us to whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles. Wisdom 12:20-21 For these were enemies of your servants, doomed to death; yet, while you punished them with such solicitude and pleading, granting time and opportunity to abandon wickedness, with what exactitude you judged your sons, to whose fathers you gave the sworn covenants of goodly promises! Us, therefore, you chastise, and our enemies with a thousand blows you punish, that we may think earnestly of your goodness when we judge, and, when being judged, may look for mercy. Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable are his ways! Wisdom 17:1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described! Romans 11:34 "For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?" Wisdom 9:13 For what man knows God's counsel, or who can conceive what the Lord intends? Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Sira 7:34 Avoid not those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn. Romans 13:1 Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God. Wisdom 6:3 Because authority was given you by the LORD and sovereignty by the Most High, who shall probe your works and scutinize your counsels! -- Sincerely, Cindy Smith _///_ // SPAWN OF A JEWISH _///_ // _///_ // <`)= _<< CARPENTER _///_ //<`)= _<< <`)= _<< _///_ // \\\ \\ \\ _\\\_ <`)= _<< \\\ \\ \\\ \\ <`)= _<< >IXOYE=('> \\\ \\ \\\ \\_///_ // // /// _///_ // _///_ // emory!dragon!cms <`)= _<< _///_ // <`)= _<< <`)= _<< \\\ \\<`)= _<< \\\ \\ \\\ \\ GO AGAINST THE FLOW! \\\ \\ A Real Live Catholic in Georgia Although not a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court, I am: A Real Live Southern Catholic in the Anglican Communion.
