I'm in the other condition - I still have a broken modem but the manual
works fine! :-)

Here's what I have on that modem, from appendix D of the manual:

(* is default.  $ means switch change only recognized with power cycle)

  7     Clear to Send           CTS Line Signal   CTS Forced On *
  8$    Command recognition     not recognized    recognized *

As I recall, 2-5 don't require power cycle as long as command recognition is
on and you do an ATZ.  My modem, even before it broke entirely, never worked
reliably enough to really tell - hopefully you have a different batch!
