Reilly) Newsgroups: comp.simulation Subject: book review(Modeling/Simulation) Summary: book review Keywords: book review Date: 18 Dec 90 14:44:26 GMT Reply-To: motcid!reillyp@uunet.uu.net Distribution: comp Organization: Motorola Inc., Cellular Infrastructure Div., Arlington Heights, IL A copy of my recent book review of Modeling & Simulation Methodology by Elzas, Oren, and Ziegler (Elsevier, North-Holland Pub.) for the SCS follows... December 1990 As a communications network performance and analysis specialist, whose job requires the use of simulation almost daily, you can imagine my anticipation upon receipt of this book for review. Here I am all set to learn some new tricks of my trade, when, upon opening the book to the title page, I am confronted with the book's subtitle: Knowledge Systems' Paradigms. Now why do you suppose the publisher neglected to add this vital tidbit to the book cover? Without this subtitle, the book is sending a very different message about its intended audience. I am a collector of technical books and have managed to amass several thousand, all of which have been read and re-read. I like the feel of a well made book, too. This book is well made, indeed. The publishers use a sturdy signature binding and a heavy paper. (Unfortunately, no attempt was made to re-typeset the papers instead of merely reproducing them from their original form.) At 487 pages, it has the heft of a garden-variety 700 page textbook. It should be all of this for the US$113.25 list price. But aside from first-rate construction, what else do you get for your money? The book is, according to Elzas' preface, a collection of "...the best papers presented at the Modelling and Simulation Methodology Working Conference held in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A., January 1987, augmented with a set of outstanding contributions that pertain to the envisaged subject area." These papers are grouped into five sections: 1. Paradigms and Methodological Bases [7 papers] 2. Environments [5 papers] 3. Rule Based Modelling and Simulation [6 papers] 4. Genetic Based Methodology [6 papers] 5. Applications [4 papers]. In the first section each editor has a paper included. Elzas' opening paper, The Role of Artificial Intelligence/Entity Structure Concept Manipulation Methods in System Modelling and Design, ultimately digresses into a brief introduction to the author's work on a lexical analyzer. Elzas references himself on 6 occasions, while throwing each of his fellow editors 5 more references. Oren's second paper, Bases for Advanced Simulation: Paradigms for the Future, offers up some insightful suggestions for the advancement of simulation practices and hopes to see them in the 1991 MSMWC. To accomplish this task, Oren required 14 self-references, and an additional 4 for his co-editors. Lastly, Zeigler offers the reader Concepts for Distributed Knowledge Maintenance In Variable Structure Models, along with seven recommended steps for determining knowledge representation and communication requirements. Like his co-editors, Ziegler tossed them 2 references and himself eight. Once we are past all of this obligatory back-slapping the book provides the reader with a few jewels. An excellent introduction On the Foundations of Knowledge Engineering is provided by Orchard, Reese and Tausner in section one of the book. In section two, the paper by Mackulak and Cocran, A Prolog-Based Simulation Modeling and Training Environment, describes a working tool, named MASCOT, that wraps an AI layer around a commercial simulation package, SIMAN, to create a simulation environment that even a simulation novice can use. The approach is exciting and should be a goal for any simulation tool project. In Section four, the paper by Goldberg, Genetics-Based Machine Learning: Whence It Came, Where It's Going, is an especially cogent survey of the literature of this exciting field. As usual, Goldberg is very thorough and offers a reference list that could start anyone down the GA road to optimization. An application of GA's by two BBNers, Davis and Coombs, is discussed in a subsequent paper, Optimizing Network Link Sizes With Genetic Algorithms. Here is a "rubber meets the road" type paper that actually tells you something about how it can be done with surprising results. Finally, in section five, Fishwick describes Abstraction Level Traversal in Hierarchical Modelling, using a simulation language he and a team constructed, HIRES. Fishwick is no longer connected with the HIRES project and the bulk of this paper also shows up as a chapter in Addison-Wesley's Artificial Intelligence and Simulation collection of papers. Is Modelling and Simulation Methodology a keeper? Would I buy this book? The answer is "yes" and "no". Yes, it belongs in a library of simulation and methodology books, filed under 'Artificial Intelligence Methods'. No, I would not buy this book personally. When I purchase a book it means I intend to devour the text, mark up its pages, and USE IT REGULARLY. This book is not of that genre, instead it provides a limited snapshot of what the state of things were in 1987 and 1988. Have your company's librarian obtain a copy or donate your review copy to your library. ========================== `` '' =================================== Patrick Reilly, Ph.D. < @ @ > tel: 1+708+632-3109 Motorola CIG/Switch Dev.
