If you had updated your hard disk controller to a fully interrupt driven system, then the machine would not slow down during these pauses, and there would be no problem. One example of this that I have seen is when people use things like Broadcast Titler 2.0, on a system with a DMA controller, and they try to make a something large do a horizontal scroll. Sometimes the "hiccup" kicks in, and the image jumps.
