I had this problem with some of the Intel tools. To get around it, you need to put your temp files somewhere that supports the operations: a real DOS partition (/dev/rdsk/0s5), or the C: pseudofilesystem (but this never shrinks, making it a poor choice for repeated temp files), or a RAM disk.
