But I think Dan's point leads to an obvious conclusion; that the new header field should declare the CHARACTER set, not the language. This is much more general. The only reason I can see for declaring the language in the header is so I can instruct my news reader I only want to read articles in Latin (hopefully, picking a "dead" language for the example avoids offending anyone). That may also be a useful feature, but it is rather independent from the issues of how to display the characters in the message. Rich -- --- Richard W.
