Happy holidays, folks - ed.] The following is excerpted from The Grapevine, From Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith in Hollywood, 19 December 1990, as found in the San Jose Mercury News. BOLDLY GOING: Gates McFadden, who plays Dr. Beverly Crusher on ``Star Trek: The Next Generation,'' says she's been talking the producers into lightening up the women's roles on the syndicated show. ``I want the women to be funny sometimes.'' She has done an episode for Jan. 7, ``In which I teach the android how to tap dance. It was a riot and I got to get some humor into my character.'' Gates, who's studied martial arts, is also getting the producers to let her do some of her own stunts. ``I'm very physical,'' she says, ``and I like action things.'' David B.
