Message-ID: <2003@beguine.UUCP> Date: 20 Dec 90 16:27:23 GMT Sender: root@beguine.UUCP Lines: 47 This is a response to Dan Mocsny's recent post in which he says: >try to stop them. If a person wants to bash Fundamentalists, it's >open season. Why? > The quick answer: self-defense ;-) Seriously, I was brought up Christian, and for a time held Fundamentalist beliefs. But I came head to head with the great intolerance that Christian Fundamentalists practice. To start with, to a Fundy, if you're not in their camp, you're going to hell. Period. Very rarely do I read a Fundy post where the author stresses thoses parts of the Bible that command Christians to refrain from judging others, to become like a Greek with the Greeks, to leave vengeance and retribution to God. Instead we are treated to flames for not accepting their beliefs. This 'one way' nonsense has a scriptural basis only in the 'no way to the father but by me' line of Jesus'. And maybe in the chosen people attitude Christians seem to inherit from their Jewish forbears. This holiday season a group of us volunteered to sing carols at the dept party. we were warned that singing only christian songs would be taken badly; so we sang one channukah song, too. Does that cover the map? Where, I asked, were the pagan chants welcoming the return of the sun, the Islamic ramadan hymns, the native american rituals that accompany the years' turning? previous paragraph a flame on ecumenism qua get the protestants, catholics and jews together and we've represented all world religions. what a WHITE attitude! And fundys have been represented as thinking ecumenism is when the Baptists and the Pentacostals hold a jopint service. When fundamentalists get off their self-appointed thrones and acknowledge the possibility that other people have a right to believe what they want without having to endure endless lectures about how they're going to BURN IN HELL maybe some of us will take them more seriously. Dan, nothing personal; I don't know what your faith is. I personally believe that my relationship with God is strictly between me and the Deity(ies). Getting in my face with your faith is WRONG in my belief. I think a lot of people agree with me and I think that's why fundamentalist attitudes get trashed on the net. When we see some humility, forgiveness, tolerance, and forbearance among the Christians, maybe they'll stop receiving the flames. Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Greg K.
