During the development of the VAX6000-400, a microcoded machine (not loadable however), VMS was booted in simulation all the way to the login prompt. The Digital Technical Journal about the 6000-400 mentions this. I recall that it took a couple (perhaps several) weeks of simulation on a VAX8600. -- = Roland G.
