You didn't say whether the Hayes was an ULTRA or not.  If it isn't, its v.32
is a half-duplex proprietary protocol that will only connect with another
Hayes at 9600 baud.  The fastest speed it has in common with the Telebit IS
2400.  The ULTRA, on the other hand should connect at 9600 without problems.
