The ULTRA, on the other hand should connect at 9600 without problems. Mike an Maurice are only half right. The ULTRA is not the only Hayes V.32 modem. Hayes has manufactured four 9600 baud modems to my knowledge, I have owned three of them. The first is called the Hayes V-Series 9600, I am guessing this is what you have, it uses a proprietary half-duplex ping-pong protocol to simulate full-duplex, it will only work with other V-series modems. The second modem is called the Hayes 9600 V.42, it also uses the V-series protocol (so you can talk to one of these) and it adds V.42 error checking to insure data transmission, latter MNP-4 was added to comply with the V.42 standard (NOTE: V.42 is an error checking protocol and not a standard, the Hayes 9600 V.42 can not talk to other V.42 modems unless they also support the V-series protocol, which none other than Hayes do). The third is called the Hayes Smartmodem V.32, it is a full duplex V.32 modem, it has a 4 line LCD display as well as soft menu buttons, so you can configure any of the modems options via the LCD and buttons (very handy in synchronous operation), or via the standard Hayes command set. This modem can also operate in a leased line environment. The SmartModem V.32 has no error checking, and there are no plans to add any. The last is the Hayes ULTRA which supports V.32, and V.42bis. The Smartmodem is a more expensive modem than the Ultra. If anyone needs one for use on a leased line or in a synchronous environment, please let me know! I have a brand new one I will gladly trade for the less expensive ULTRA or comparable modem. If it turns out that you do have the Smartmodem V.32 or the ULTRA then you should be able to talk with other V.32 modems, otherwise you have an expensive 2400 baud modem (if its the V.42 at least you have some nice error checking ;-) ). Did I get this pretty right, Tony?
